Create a stunning quilt using the Kawandi quilt technique in this inspiring and creativity-focused class. This method allows you to design organically as you sew, resulting in a one-of-a-kind quilt full of movement and personality. Students will learn layout planning, improvisational piecing techniques, and construction tips to confidently complete their project.
What is Kawandi Quilting?

Saying “Kawadi Quilts” is actually a redundancy, but the phrase is widely used nonetheless. Africans arrived in India in mostly three “waves.” The earliest migration was as far back as the second or third centuries CE, when African merchants and sailors arrived in India . The second occurred in the fourteenth century.
- Kawandi quilts are a traditional hand-stitched quilt style created by the Siddi people of India, whose African heritage and cultural traditions influence their unique textile art. Kawandi quilts are known for their improvisational design, visible hand stitching, and the use of fabric scraps layered and stitched from the outside edges inward. Each quilt tells a personal story and celebrates creativity, resourcefulness, and cultural history.
